Owner Nick Seymour acquired his barista skills in the home of speciality coffee: Melbourne. He quickly developed a passion for sourcing, roasting and the blending of coffee beans. Returning to Ireland, after extensive travelling, he perfected his craft with Belfast coffee guru Russell Bailie – a relationship that remains close to this day.
Seeing the potential in a vacant, pigeon-inhabited shed (and it’s proximity to the tram station) back in 2008, Seymour and his loyal staff have steadily gained an expansive following. The company’s scope has grown accordingly, and now supplies beans to many venues including it’s sister cafe Dave’s, in Wicklow Town, and nearby dog-themed cafe Pupp.
The shop’s sign questions ‘Is this the best coffee?’, it’s certainly the best value, with espresso still only €1, teas €2 and affordable cakes by the ‘Project 12’ bakery. Amazingly, Nick’s provides free coffee for over 65’s and local community groups too.
With long opening hours, regulars can range from grab-and-go LUAS commuters to Dublin characters of a bygone era. You may also come across shift-working taxi drivers and Gardai in need of a fix. And of course there’s the store’s eponymous owner, who is always keen for a chat. The little coffee hut has lots of plants and artwork on the walls but be warned, seating is limited and mostly outdoor.
